The importance of a correctly fitting harness for your dog cannot be overstated. Whether you’re a Canicross athlete, hobby runner with a dog alongside or simply a dog owner, if your dog wears a harness, the fit is crucial. You wouldn’t walk in a straight jacket or shoes that are too small — and an ill-fitting harness can feel exactly the same for your dog.
Snowpaw are harness specialists who not only ensure a comfortable fit but also recommend the correct harness for the job. No two dogs are the same, and finding the right fit isn’t always easy.
The harness must be comfortable around the neck, with no choking, rasping, or whistling when your dog is pulling or walking.
Your dog should have full freedom of shoulder movement, which is usually achieved with a ‘Y’-shaped front rather than a strap straight across the chest that can cause restriction and chafing.
The length under tension is important — it should not extend beyond the last rib, as this can cause pinching and restriction.
Check that the tug line attachment sits comfortably and isn’t too long or too far back.
Padding is another consideration, especially for short-coated or sensitive-skinned dogs, as it helps prevent rubbing.
Strength and durability matter too: has the harness been load-tested, and is it suitable for your dog’s size and power if they lunge or pull under constant tension? Quality harnesses are an investment, so expert advice is worth seeking before spending your hard-earned money.
I currently use the Non-stop Dogwear Freemotion Harness for my two Pointers and have found them excellent due to the adjustability and therefore comfort and fit — particularly helpful for my dog which has a deep chest and short back.
My third Pointer raced in a Dragrattan X-back Harness, yet despite my dogs appearing similar in size, that harness was far too big for my female — proof that looks can be deceiving when it comes to fit.
For us constantly training and racing, my dogs must be comfortable and be able to run freely without restrictions. I want to have the confidence in my equipment while we are on the trail.
And finally, colour! It shouldn’t matter, but it of course does — the Non-stop Dogwear range comes in gorgeous shades that are hard to resist. Joking aside, professional guidance makes all the difference, and SnowPaw offer invaluable advice, including free virtual fittings if you can’t attend in person.
