Even here in the UK we've been having some very wintry weather recently and even though our Husky Diesel is a big boy with a big thick coat we still take measures to keep him happy and healthy during the cold snaps!
Here are some top tips for all dog owners this winter.
1) Invest in a decent jumper or jacket for your dog - especially if they are a small dog or short haired - older dogs and puppies can also struggle with regulating their body heat. A good way to think about it is if you're feeling the cold then your dog probably is too and remember if they're running through grass their exposed bellies are in contact with the wet and cold!
2) Dry off your dogs feet when you get home - not only good to stop the muddy paw prints every where but helps keep their feet healthy. When they're wet or cold your dogs paws can get sensitive and more likely to be injured, like yours if they get pruny from wearing wet socks! Wiping them down is a great way to minimise the risk of salt burn too time to check for any scrapes or sore spots too.

3) Spend more time indoors - we all love a good walk with the dog but if it's especially cold it's worth making the walks shorter and burning off some of that energy with indoor games. A good game of tug or fetch and feeding using puzzle games or snuffle mats is surprisingly tiring for your pooch and a great way to stimulate them mentally as well as physically.
4) Put an extra blanket in their bed - if your pup is curling up in a tighter ball than usual and tucking their nose into their tail then the chances are they're feeling chilly. Raised beds are often a good idea to minimise draughts and a cosy blanket for them to burrow into can make all the difference.
5) Don't forget grooming - while it's best not get your dogs haircut in the colder seasons it's important to make sure longer haired breeds are well brushed. Matted hair doesn't insulate your dog so well and doesn't keep out the rain and the cold as efficiently.
