Description

This harness is specifically designed for use in dog drafting work, for pulling carts or four wheeled wagons.

Popular competitively in the US, drafting is ideally suited to large breeds such as the Bernese Mountain Dog and Newfoundland dogs who can move substantial loads in competition.

This dog harness, developed by Consie and Roger Powell, is for use primarily with a wagon, cart or travois, but can also be used with a dog sled or toboggan. This harness features the same neck design as our sledding harnesses to allow the dog free movement. The extremely adjustable forward cinch (girth) has loops for shafts. The rear cinch (girth) (use optional) helps hold the D-rings and side straps in place as well as keeping the harness in place when the cart pushes up against it. Both cinches (girths) fasten with Delrin side release snaps. Adjustable traces are included. Side release snaps on shaft loops to allow dog to be quickly disconnected from cart.

Please read our guide on measuring your dog for a harness.

Details of Colours and Padding can be found here.

Please note, these harnesses are made to order and there is a delivery time of approximately 4-8 weeks. Please be sure that this is the style harness you want and the size you order is the correct size. These harnesses are custom and may NOT be returned.

Measuring Guide

We require three measurements for the Weight Pull or Carting Harness: the Neck Measurement, the Tail Measurement, and the Rear Measurement.

Neck – Measure from just ahead of the withers at the base of the neck to the top of the breastbone, then double this measurement. Work the tape under the fur; pull it snug, but not stretched. Measure the dog, not the fur! Measure only one side of the dog, and then double the measurement. Wrapping the tape measure all the way around the neck may distort the measurement. Do not measure where the collar sits, but lower - please see the heavy black line on the above diagram.

Tail – Start tape at top of breastbone. Pass between the front legs, then up around rib cage to base of tail. Lift tail to feel join.

Check fit of tail length by pulling on webbing to see if the webbing will come to the base of the tail. Webbing should not come to the base of the tail unless there is tension against it. The more coat the dog has, the more tension is required.

Rear - Start tape at top of breastbone, pass between front legs, following the line of the center of the ribs, then to back of thigh (this will be the position of the spreader bar).

Weight Pull and Carting Harnesses are custom made and not held in stock.  Please be sure of your measurements before you place your order as custom harnesses are non-refundable.
